Funding

Below are grants and fellowships offered to graduate students. These are not linked within our site, but a quick google search will bring up all pertinent information you should neeed.

Next to each funding source are the names of EEB graduate students who have received these awards and may be willing to share their thoughts (and potentially applications) if you ask them. Alternatively, you can email GREBEemail@gmail.com to request the successful applications we have archived.

If you know of funding sources (or have received funding!) that are not listed here, please let us know so we can add them.

Outreach

Outreach

We're very passionate about our outreach! There are many ways graduate students can get involved in outreach (great for getting in those "Broader Impacts" for NSF grants AND mandatory for receiving GREBE Travel Awards). Here are just a few:

GREBE Outreach Committee
Engaging Knoxville in Ecology and Evolution (EKEE--pronounced: icky)

Formed in Spring 2016, the GREBE Outreach Committee is dedicated to providing students with local outreach opportunities. If you are interested in joining the Outreach Committee send an email to eeboutreach@gmail.com and check out our new website.

Outreach Committee Meetings will meet every other week during the school year.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person outreach events have been severely limited. See below for past outreach programs. GREBE hopes to resume in-person outreach soon!

1. Market Square Farmers' Market

We have a booth at the Market Square Farmers' Market every 3rd Sat of the month (May-Nov). At the market, we provide information on a variety of topics, including native and invasive plants, ecosystems, and bee and bat ecology, and we sell photos taken by our graduate students and crafts made by the outreach committee. Come see us at the booth from 9am-2pm on those Saturdays! If you are interested in volunteering at the market either selling materials or leading outreach projects, send us an email.

2. Local School Outreach

Graduate students are frequently asked to volunteer to help local schools in the Knoxville community. These opportunities may include guest lectures, science fair judging, and more! GREBE and departmental leaders will pass on opportunities as they arise.

3. KidsU

Kids U is a summer program for students in 4th - 12th grade and run through the University's Office of Outreach.  EEB graduate students are encouraged to suggest and lead courses throughout the summer. This is GREBE's primary source of funding for Travel Awards.

Previous courses offered by GREBE grad students in the summer have been:
  1. Bugs (Chelsea Miller and Tyson Paulson)
  2. Decoding the Plant Puzzle (John Reese and Kendall Beals)
  3. Vertebrate Zoology (Angela Chuang, Orlando Schwery, Jessica Dreyer and Jordan Bush)
  4. Snakes Alive! (Todd Pierson and Hailee Korotkin)
  5. Animal Behavior (Domonique Hatton)
  6. Friend or Foe? Species Interactions (Chloe Lash and Morgan Roche)
  7. Calculations and Crime: Solving Mysteries with Math (Jordan Bush, Shelby Scott, Margaurete Romero, and Cedric Landerer)
  8. Into the Wild (Miranda Chen and Jessica Beck)

4. EEB Prospective Student Recruitment Weekend

All graduate students are welcomed and encouraged to assist with hosting prospective students when they are invited in the spring to visit campus.  Students are needed to shuttle students to and from the airport and off-campus events and to provide Saturday entertainment (hiking, tour of Knoxville, etc) for visiting students. Keep an eye out for emails from GREBE in Jan!

5. Darwin Day

Darwin Day is an annual event hosted by many University departments. Darwin Day was created by former EEB professor Dr. Massimo Pigliucci in February of 1997. It is a volunteer-run event dedicated to informing the public about evolution and its importance as a unifying concept in all of biology.  EEB graduate students have traditionally played a critical role in continuing Darwin Day. Our own Alannie Grant was the leader of Darwin Day 2017!
